'Save Our School' campaign
Saving the little school with a big heart (and a bigger voice!)
03rd Oct 2007
Exciting to some more than others, comes the news that Google has now added our website to their database. From today searches related to save our school will present us in the result pages, and impressivley high too. Will it bring us more visitors?
Recent studies suggest that for a lot of internet users going on the internet starts with a search in their favourite search engine, which is probably set as their home page. Is this a bad thing? Well that depends what it is you are doing, as with everything, you need to use the right tool for the right job.
If you are going online and want to find out information about a car for instance, then you would probably use a search engine and type in the name of the car, then browse through the various sites offered till you've had your fill of information.
However, if you have been watching TV and saw an advert for a local dealer offering a great price on the car you are after, then chances are you've seen the address on the advert and know exactly where you want to go. This is where you should enter the web address into the address field located in the address bar (was there enough addresses in that sentence? I think I addressed that point well then).
Ok, ok, back to the point. Well I have had a few people come to me at the school or send me emails saying "The website is not working!". This results in me scurrying back to my office to find nothing is the matter.
It has been on further investigation that I have found out they are typing the address into their search engine, and as our website is all sparkly and new, we were not yet in their database to be found.
Within a few days of being online we were getting the odd person coming through from MSN and Yahoo's search engines, but as Google makes up for over 50% of all searches on the internet and we were not in their database then people simply were not finding us.
Had they typed our web address into their address field though, up we would have popped, but from today we are now listed in Google and a search for 'saveourschool' has us proudly sitting in first place within the results and a search for 'save our school' has us as the 4th site (5th result).
So everyone should now be able to find the site without any problems, but more importantly let's hope Google, MSN and Yahoo send us a lot more traffic equalling more supporters and possible media coverage.
